5 Simple Steps For Expert Cushion Styling

Let’s talk about cushion styling. Look, it’s hardly rocket science, but for many it can be like the deepest mystery of the universe. And cushions really can change the entire look and feel of a room!

Are there any real rules on this or is it just poetic license? Well let me say, in my time I have seen some real travesties that literally break a room’s potential. I have been watching these Dream Home series lately on massive multi million buck builds. The architect and builders have put so much time and effort into the space and construction concept, only for the designer or home owner to disrupt the tone by their furniture and textiles choices… or lack there of.

Here’s a guide that should be of help to you understanding the mysterious layering of a space, be it sofa or bed.

1. Colour: Let’s start here and be honest - are you a cool base person (stark whites and clean greys) or a warm base character (off whites, creams and soft neutrals)? Decide now if you want a flash of colour and what those happy colours that you love are. If you have trouble deciding, grab a colour wheel or go have a look in your wardrobe at what you wear and there’s your truth. If you want colour, limit yourself to three that work together.

2. Base: Start with plain or solid colour cushions. You can even combine 3-5 neutrals, so long as they stay either cool or warm. It’s when you mix them that you throw the theme off (believe me, it’s right here the problem starts). Also consider size - these guys are in the back and have to be the biggest. Opt for euro cushions on a bed or our oversized lounge cushions.

3. Texture: I put this next as it seems on trend that a lot of people stop here and are happy with that. Now texture can be anything you chose - knit, leather, linen, tweed weaves… but they absolutely must be in line with the neutrals you have. These guys are the next size down, think medium or lumbar cushions.

4. Pattern: You can just go with just plain and texture. But if you go pattern, here’s a truth: the world is divided into two types of people - symmetrical or asymmetrical. Test yourself by looking at both, where does your eye land consistently? That’s your preference. Whatever shape or form you decide, it has to marry with the plain and textured, even if it just grabs at flecks. Be brave, but whatever you do don’t mix the two. It doesn’t end well!

BONUS TIP! Pattern Pairing: The “Rule Of 3s” is a pretty safe formula, this is where you use an odd-numbered group to create balance and interest. But the magic code here is that they need to be different sizes and proportions. There can only be one loud mouth in the room, then he has a support act and a Mr Inbetween guy. Ahh but then there’s this next dude who’s going to be your conversation grabber…

5. The Feature or Hero: You may or may not want to invite this guy, as in some cases, he provides absolutely no function other than to be talked about. What is he? Well he could be covered in shells, raffia, metal, feathers… you name it! But it can be clever, interesting or different to convey a sense of whimsy and humour. What he makes up for in smaller size is unexpected impact. Few fear to tread here, but it’s good to live life on the edge!
